Romans 1:17: The Doctrine of Justification by Faith Alone
welcome to real Christianity mission is to bring the church back to the Bible my name is Dale Partridge and I'm the president of relearn. Org and Reformation Seminary the premise of the show is simple the culture is growing darker the church is in need of sound Doctrine and many Christians are hungry for the truth join me here each week as we look to scripture and discover what it really means to be a Christian
welcome to the show last week we tackled what some people believed to be the most important verse in the New Testament today we are going to confront the second half of this incredibly important passage of scripture last week I was preaching I got a chance to get in the pulpit and actually share that message give you guys the recording if you haven't listened to that episode yet go back and check out the first half of this little two-part series that we're doing here
today I am back in front of my podcast microphone in my new office which doesn't have the best sound control at this point we will later so if it sounds a little more accurate than normal it won't be the norm going forward we are in Romans chapter 1 verses 16 and 17 today we are going to be discussing 17 but less just briefly look back at what we learned from verse 16 my synopsis from last week was if you love people he will tell them the gospel if you love people you will tell them the gospel however we learned that many people are ashamed of the gospel and they I guess it's actually their fearing the response that comes from the message of the Cross they fear rejection and persecution at the illogical defense they fear the sense of embarrassment and unpredictability in unpreparedness that's common with those
are in the ministry of evangelism Paul was not troubled by any of that as a passive says he was not ashamed of the Gospel but they're we're just it's just not about words Paul is actually walking this out and last week we saw that his life was the evidence of those words Paul was beaten and stoned in prison did hate it but none of it would stop him but how did he endure what what permitted him to continue on what was the driver behind his commitment to the gospel while he tells us he says for I'm not ashamed of the gospel because or 4 it is Isis because it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes to the Jew first and also to the Greek he's not ashamed of the gospel because it is the means of Salvation to everyone who believes the gospel is the only Channel and mode of redemption there is
forgiveness in no other name then Jesus Christ ultimately Paul can endure the persecution because he cares more about souls that he cares about self and he loves
people and he's willing to tell them the truth and that is without repentance and faith in Jesus Christ and they will die in their sins Jesus in John 8:24 says I told you that you would die in your Sims 4 Less you believe that I am he you will die in your sins now to dye your sins is to say that you will die guilty you will pay the external consequences turn up the external cause codes to the Eternal consequences for your sins against any trouble God. Paul is unashamed to Proclaim this message because he loves them it's a last week's passage he told us the first reason that he's on ashamed of the Gospel today he's going to tell us the second reason he is unashamed of the Gospel reason number one was because of the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes reason ever to is our texts today which says because in it
the righteousness of God is revealed from face-to-face as it is written the righteous shall live by faith my summary sentence for this text is God removes our guilt if you'd walk away from today and you had to kind of put a banner above this message it would read God removes our guilt in the world who is desperately searching to escape both guilt and shame today we learned that if you remove guilt you remove shame but we also learn that only God can remove guilt and today's text it's about the moral state of humanity people often forget the forensic nature of the gospel God is Holy just and righteous that is in God there is no sin he is morally perfect and without flaw first John 15 says
this is the message we have heard from him and Proclaim to you the God is light and in him there is no Darkness at all r.c. Sproul and his book The Holiness of God which is absolutely fantastic and essential Christian reading it reads quote the Bible says that God is Holy Holy Holy not that he is merely holy or even holy holy he is Holy Holy Holy the Bible never says that God is love love love or Mercy Mercy Mercy or wrath wrath wrath or justice justice justice it does say that he is Holy Holy Holy the whole earth is full of his glory and quote fundamentally the word holy mean separate God is far above us is far beyond us he's completely other than us he is morally pure fully righteous and he's unique and this is why the Bible says things like for Samuel 22 there is no
holy like the Lord there is none beside you there is no Rock like our God or Exodus 1511 who is like you Lord among the gods who is like you Majestic and Holiness awesome and glorious Deeds doing wonders the people of scripture are asking these questions to point out that no one's like you God no one's like you are so separate and different now the other hand humanity is not wholly
we are sinful guilty and as a result we are separated from God Isaiah 59:1 through to says behold the Lord's hand is not shortened that it cannot save for his ear do that it cannot hear but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God and your sins have hidden his face from you so that you are so that he does not hear now pay attention your theologically speaking this is our problem God is Holy and we are not our sin has separated us from God if you remember after the fall of Adam and Eve
in the Garden of Eden the result was physical separation right they were banished from the garden God sent them out away from them prior to the fall however Adam and Eve were wholly without sin and as a result they were United to God they were in God's presence they dwelled in the presence of God because of their Holiness I did not send it they would have continued on into eternity living in the presence of their maker so in a sense Eden was a foreshadow of Heaven it was God's people essentially blissfully United to him but as we know Eden did not last actually did an episode talking about spiritual death and spiritual life it's probably maybe 20 or 30 episodes back talking about the idea of death of Separation might be a good resource for those of you who want to learn about that essentially our problem
is this Humanity needs to be reconciled to the back to God we are separated and we are separated because our sins and separation needs to be healed
we think about that passage in 1st Peter Wright that talks about by his stripes we have been healed that separation needs to be healed we are sinful and guilty and somehow need to become holy and righteous give this is the cosmic setting of The Gospel this is the problem in Humanities story and today's text reveals the solution to man's greatest problem in my opinion preaching through Romans 1:16 and now preaching through Romans 1:17 I do believe that these two passages of scripture
are the most vital of the New Testament it is the culmination the Apex the solution to what the entire Bible is about which is redemption and so these are vital tax and please continue on this episode as we learn about the doctrine of justification now before we dive end I have to stop you guys because we have a sponsor for this episode and our sponsors are so important to us because they really do continue our work they allow us to continue to do what we do they are in a way supporting us financially and allowing us to not have to do so many different types of sponsorships for this podcast and so we only partner with really unique and relational

would you can use CO2 real 15 that's real 15 for 15% off your entire order and guys let's let's show some support to our sponsors again they really do help this show continue one again that is a send wood.com back into Romans 1:17 I'm going to read it aloud here I come to read for 6 to 16 and 17 for I'm not ashamed of the gospel for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes to the Jew first and also to the Greek for or we could use the word because in it the righteousness of God is revealed from face-to-face as it is written the righteous shall live by faith so in verse 17 we learned that Paul is not ashamed of the gospel because the righteousness of God is revealed from Faith to Faith
yeah this passage is not speaking to the righteous character of God it's speaking to the righteousness provided by God in the gospel by Paul is not ashamed of the gospel because it is the means which God provides righteousness to the unrighteous the uncrossable chasm between God and man that's caused by our sin the separation that we have the canyon between a holy God and wretched Sinners has been crossed by Christ Jesus becomes the bridge specifically his righteousness and his perfect sinlessness is given to us through faith that you might not know it but this verse was actually the key that unlocked the entire Protestant Reformation the Roman Catholic Church believes in a Works based gospel they believe
we earned our righteousness through keeping the sacraments and abstaining from Mortal sins for example just a few days ago I had a woman write to me on Instagram she had what probably was a Catholic background and was responding to one of my post and ask quote do you so you don't lose your salvation if you sin and to which I replied no all Christensen you're not saved by your obedience your saved by the perfect Obedience of Christ because of that Grace we should not send but our sin past present and future has been nailed to the cross and the righteousness the perfect Obedience of Christ is given to us by faith
now in cannabis classic Roman Catholic response she said so even if I murder someone right which is a mortal sin in the Catholic church I don't lose myself she asked I responded know now if you kept on murdering people it would start to become evident that you aren't truly saved but save the people sin however saved people are also Sanctified which means that over time they will sin less as God makes them more like Christ remember your saved by the righteousness of Christ not by your own obedience this is the gospel and quote and we have to remember Martin Luther
how does exact same dilemma in his autobiography from 1545 he wrote his testimony and about his misunderstanding of this exact passing and how Romans 1:17 with the key that unlocked his heart he wrote quote but up until then a single word in it chapter 1 verse 17 in it the righteousness of God is revealed and quote that had stood in my way for I hated that word righteousness of God which according to the use and custom of all the teachers was God is righteous and punishes the unrighteous sinner I did not love yes I hated the righteous God who punishes Center and secretly fed if not Blasphemous leaked certainly murmuring greatly I was angry with God thus I raged with a Fierce and trouble to Concha
at last however by the mercy of God meditating day and night I gave he to the context of the words namely in it the righteousness of God is revealed as it is written that he who through faith is righteous shall live there I began to understand that the righteousness of God is that by which the righteous lives by a gift of God named Levi face and this is the meaning the righteousness of God is revealed by the gospel here I felt I was altogether born again and that entered Paradise itself through open Gates there a totally other face of the entire scripture showed itself to me and I extolled my sweetness my sweetest word with a love as great as the hatred with which I had before hated the word righteousness of God thus that Paul in that place and not time for me was truly the
gate to paradise and quote what an amazing testimony and we'll break this passage down you know this is written obviously over five hundred years ago but we'll get a chance to talk about this and look at the doctrine of justification but it was this verse that became the Bedrock for what is called the doctrine of justification that is that we are justified by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone but how does a righteous God justify unrighteous Sinners how does God deal with our sin the Bible says the wages of sin is death so the central question becomes how can Sinners be made righteous while God maintains his Justice
blast out again how considers he made a righteous while God maintains his Justice would it be just for a judge to let some sort of crime happen and go unpunished know it would not be just therefore he would not be a good judge God must remain just in order to remain wholly in perfect so the central question again becomes how can Sinners be made righteous while God maintain his Justice now we know that adjust God cannot allow Cindy go unpunished someone must pay the price so how do Sinners become righteous now the answer is given to us at the cross 2nd Corinthians 5:21 says for our sake he God made him Christ to Beeson who knew no sin so that in him price
we might become the righteousness of God so what does God do with your sin while he applies it to Jesus so who dies for your sin Jesus does for your sense of who takes on the wrath of God for your sin jesus takes on the wrath of God for your sin Colossians 2:13 through 14 says and you who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh God Made Alive together with him having forgiven us all our trespasses by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands this he set aside nailing it to the Cross so God takes our sin and punishes Jesus to maintain his Justice then God gives the righteousness of Christ to us making us holy
you have to grasp is I'm going to say one more time God takes our sin and punishes Jesus to maintain his Justice then God gives the righteousness of Christ to us through faith making us holy this is good news this really is good news why is Paul not ashamed of the gospel because it is God's provision for Sinners to become righteous it's God's a means to reconcile Humanity to himself it's God's way to make those who are guilty testified before him a few chapters later in Romans 3:21 through 26 Paul summarizes beautiful gospel when he writes this quote but now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law. You don't run it through obedience essentially
the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe for there is no distinction for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God and are justified by his grace as a gift for the Redemption that is in Christ Jesus whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood to be received by faith this was to show God's of righteousness it was to show his righteousness at the present time so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus and quote this is
an amazing passage of scripture that you can write an entire thousand page book on when he talks about whom God put forward as propitiation by his blood the word propitiation means appeasing the wrath of God Through Blood Sacrifice that's really what propitiation means it's talking about atonement there and he's saying whom God put forward as propitiation by his blood to be received by faith this was to show their for essentially the same for this reason to show God's of righteousness it was to show his righteousness at the present time so that he that is God the Father might be just and the justifier
of the one who has faith in Jesus doing the gospel God remains just and he also Remains the justifier through Christ that is you do nothing to earn salvation in fact the Bible teaches that even your repentance and Faith are a gift of God and this is why we can all say who are saved all glory be to Christ because Christ becomes your righteousness of Christ becomes your obedience Christ becomes your Holiness the late Theologian Jerry Bridges said it this way
because we are united by faith to Jesus Christ who is perfectly righteous God accepts us as perfectly righteous God does not resort to some kind of legal fiction calling something right is that is not rather he declares us righteous on the basis of the real accomplished righteousness of Christ imputed to us because of our Union with him that is to be justified before God means more than to be declared not guilty it actually means to be declared righteous it means God has imputed or charged the guilt of our sin to his son Jesus Christ and is imputed or credited Christ's righteousness to us he continues by saying quote as we come to Christ then empty-handed claiming no merit of our own but clinging by faith to his blood and righteousness we
are Justified we pass immediately from a state of condemnation and spiritual death to a state of Pardon and acceptance and the sure hope of eternal life our sins are blotted out and we are closed with the righteousness of Jesus Christ in our standing before God we will never be more righteous even in heaven than we were the day we trusted in Christ or we are now and quote did you grasp that did you grasp that
the reality is this
when you trust in Jesus Christ when your bored again you are as righteous as Christ is right this you will never be more righteous even in heaven then you are right now yes you will be more Sanctified and yes you will have less in but you are not standing before God on your obedience or your righteousness anyways because you have the imputed righteousness of Jesus Christ there is no way that you can be any more righteous than you are now even in your sin because Christ atone for your sin past present and future you can stand before God righteous now and before when you stand before him on Judgement Day this is an amazing fact you will never be any more righteous than you are now because Christ is your righteousness and you will never be any more righteous than Christ is in Christ you are a saved as Christ has saved you are as righteous as Christ is right just as long as Christ is righteous which he obviously will you will always remain righteous this is beautiful this is why Romans 8:1 can say there is
for now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus that is you have no guilt before God there is no sin that can condemn you there is no law that can bind you and because you have no guilt you have no shame you have been made worthy in Christ you have found identity in Christ now all says should we keep on sending the grace May abound certainly not it doesn't mean that we just keep on rampantly sitting nose out of the Gratitude and glory and and thankfulness in love of God we are to obey and we know that Christ has promised that we will be disciplined it'll be a mark of those who are saved he will continue to make us like us he who began a good work in you will finish it we know these things are true so God will continue to make you more holy you will sin less as you mature in Christ
we have found identity in Christ by Paul Rice in Galatians 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ it is no longer I who live but Christ who lives in me than the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith and the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for Me In Christ Alone we find reconciliation to God this is the gospel and what about those who reject the gospel
what about those who believe they can send against the holy God and go unpunished what are those who prefer to pay the consequences of their sin for themselves what happens to those people 2nd Corinthians 5:10 tells us for we must all appear before the Judgment seat of Christ so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body whether good or evil John 3:36 says whoever believes in the son has eternal life whoever does not obey the son shall not see life but the wrath of God remains on him
Revelation 21:8 says but as for the Cowardly the faithless the detestable as for murderers the sexually immoral Sorcerers idolatry and all liars their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur which is the second death that is a second death is not just the separation of the body and the Soul which is physical. The separation of the soul from God eternally is the second death
2nd Thessalonians 1:9 they will suffer the punishment of Eternal destruction away from the presence of the Lord there's that separation again and from the glory of his might and quote so when speaking to the Judgment Day Jesus in Matthew 2546 says and these will go away into Eternal punishment but the righteous into eternal life we must ask have you been made righteous through faith in Christ you who are listening right now have you been made righteous through faith in Jesus Christ acts 3:19 says repent therefore and turn it in that your sins may be blotted out Jesus confirms this in John 5:24 when he says truly truly I say to you whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life he does not come into judgment but it's passed from death
the life we must compel people to come to Christ there is salvation in no other name than Jesus Christ let's pray
father we thank you for your son Jesus Christ the righteousness of God the means of Salvation to everyone who believes God we pray that those were listening now will grasp the importance of this piece of your Plan of Redemption and that you would Elevate their view of grace and mercy that we received through your son ultimately we pray that you are glorified more and that we can preach your gospel more Faithfully we ask that you would help us to do this we ask that you would give us the confidence the conviction we need to persevere we ask that you would help us preach the gospel to those who have not heard it in the name of your son Jesus we pray amen
