HOLY BIBLE
Why Should Christians Repent if They're Already Saved?
welcome to real Christianity a weekly show designed to help Christians know their Bible defend their faith and truly understand what it means to follow Jesus the premise is simple the culture is getting louder the church is getting flash ear but few pastors are teaching on how to live a Biblical life my name is Dale Partridge along with my incredible wife Veronica join us as we start an important conversation about what it really means to be a Christian
welcome to real Christianity today we are talking about why should Christians repent if they're already saved is actually pretty common question that I've received several times over the past year maybe two years more people are asking this question about ongoing repentance really talk about that today I'm also going to give up brief exposition of the Gospel that might help you have a better comprehension of how repentance fits in with the gospel and and why Christians should continue on with repentance or get started Veronica's not with us on this episode but she will be back next week one thing I wanted to mention is if you guys haven't heard of our program at ultimate marriage.com it is a really great program with a six-week program you could do it with your small group or just as an individual couple it's on how to build a Biblical marriage and we talked about kids sex finances the physiology of marriage
who rules all of it and it's not overwhelming it's just a pick a day once a week for 6 weeks straight before you go to bed spend a half hour to 45 minutes going through the video and then doing a few questions with our marriage challenge checklist it's a great program and we've had so many couples probably close to a thousand couples over the last two years go to the program and just have much healthier biblical narrative so if you want to check that out marriage.com again not so ultimate marriage.com okay I want to talk about repentance and we're going to start with a passage from Hebrews chapter 10 11 through 14 which would you read something like this your theology might say why do we need to repent if this is true so we're going to start from here it says verse 11 and every priest stands daily
service offering repeatedly the same sacrifices which can never take away sins for 12 but when Christ has offered for all-time a single sacrifice for sins he sat down at the right hand of God waiting from that time until his enemies to be made a footstool for his feet for by a single offering he has made perfected for all time those who are being Sanctified okay so this is a contrast between the insufficient system of the Old Testament sacrificial system for removing sins of being clean and a contrast to the New Covenant system that Jesus is the high priest and he makes the the sacrifice of himself and is a sufficient sacrifice for all time in comparison to the repeated sacrificial work that was happening by priests in the Old Testament of sheets lambs and Rams and Bulls so if Jesus is work on the cross is sufficient for
all time and for all the saints why are Christians who have already been forgiven a past present and future sin called to ongoing repentance or to participate in that ongoing repentance this is already been forgiven has a good question and so to start let's just confirm that anyone who's been brought to repentance and receive Christ through faith is completely forgiven for all time okay these are people who have felt the fear of the Lord and by that I mean they've felt the Deep sense of guilt shame and conviction over their sin and realized their inability to stand before God and earn a righteous verdict what I mean is that they knew they were guilty and deserving of Health these people have been there and for that reason these people Christians that is have thrown themselves at the feet of Christ and place
all their trust in all their hope into him who is righteous and who can earn that right is verdict before the king now why does placing our faith in Christ make us not guilty this is another quick question since we're here let's just talk about it what Christ did two things for us he lived a sinless life that means that Jesus follow God's law perfectly and then he allowed himself to be sacrificed on a cross in our place is a way to pay for our sins. This is sometimes a complex idea for people to understand if they don't have the understanding of the Old Testament and they don't understand you know sometimes in the in the church today we give the good news without getting the bad news we we give the good news without explaining the context of Jesus has planned or God's Plan of Redemption throughout the Old Testament when we look at the Bible the way that they explain the gospel is always through the lens of the Old Testament what what happened there and how Jesus is the Fulfillment of all the things that were
we're at Preparing People for and plenty of people to in the Old Testament and someone give you just a quick lesson here it's Leviticus 17:11 it says for the life of the flesh is in the blood okay so just real quick what it's saying here is that blood is actually the life our life that seemingly intangible substance of life is actually in the blood is what it's saying in this is actually come to be scientifically true is that what makes actual life existence has been scientifically proven back to their realizing that it's it's found in the blood and so this is Leviticus 17:11 for the life of the flesh is in the blood and God saying and I have given it for you on the altar to make atonement for your souls for it is the blood that makes atonement for since and so this idea here is that you oh wow
God has given us blood so that especially for the Levites in the Old Testament Narrative of the sacrificial system where you're sacrificing animals and the blood needs to be spilled in order for the sins of that individual or the nation of Israel to be forgiven or to be covered is what the word atone means so in other words in order to cover our sin someone's blood or someone's life is life in the blood must be spilled on our behalf we're guilty we need to be paid we need a consequence of price and somebody's life needs to be taken or order to cover up our sins and then in the Old Testament as I said before it was sheep Rams and Bulls in the New Testament it was Jesus write the perfect lamps as John the Baptist says the lamb who takes away the sins of the whole world
rights of Jesus he substituted his life and the place of our life he paid the debt so that we wouldn't have to say second Corinthians 5:21 says for our sake he Jesus our Sorry God made him Jesus to Beeson who knew no sin so that in him we might become the righteousness of God I'm going to read that just one more time for you to grasp it okay 2nd Corinthians 5:21 it says for our sake he made that is God made him Jesus to be sin who knew no sin who didn't send it all so that in him in Christ we might become the righteousness of God can this is a beautiful statement what what's what being said here is it God has actually imputed or given Christ's righteousness to us through faith in Christ so so we've been given
the righteous verdict even though we are guilty
God is actually applied Christ's righteousness to us and the way that we receive that applications through faith this is why we're not guilty so if you've experienced this in your life you are safe your saved born again Christian you will never be unsafe you you've been born again and you've been Justified and you will be glorified you can see Romans 8:2 talks about that and how do we how do we know that how do we know that you're you're not going to be unsaved at some point how can we rest the fact that your repentance and Faith or Jesus has repented believe was sufficient and and it was sufficient in a sense that you are saved how do we know that John 10:27 229 says Jesus talking he says my sheep hear my voice and I know them and they follow me I give them eternal life and stop right there can you really promise somebody eternal life
if you could possibly lose your salvation
I'll take the important question to ask but can you really promise eternal life if you could possibly lose your salvation he goes on to say after this I give them eternal life and he said and they will never perish if these are Jesus's words that he gives his sheep eternal life and they will never perish that's a bold Proclamation Jesus Is God incarnate In the Flesh the Bible says that it's impossible for God to lie he says right here that they will never perish, and then he starts a note Turtle scene will take you use will never perish or are Christians will never perish as she will never perish and then it talks about these external things he says and no one will snatch them out of my hand so no internal thing in you or no external thing will take you away from him for 29 my father who has given them to me is greater than all and no one is able to snatch them out of the father's hand
so we get back to the to square one if all of this is true why do Christians still need to repent they're never going to perish the sacrifice has been made once and for all for all time past present and future sins you've been Justified you have been imputed his righteousness you are eternally secure why do we still need to repent as Christians so I'm going to break this down into two types of repentance we see in the Bible and I'm going to call this big our repentance and little our repentance peso big our repentance is the type of repentance that is generated during the moment you first believe this is the oh my goodness I'm guilty save me repentance that you only do once
then we have in contrast to that the architect in compliment to that is Lil our repentance which is not as much about guilt and shame as it is about sorrow and sadness for the Train The God Who did save you so little our repentance is not a saving repentance but in a sense it's a renewal of the heart behind that saving repentance
but most of all I would say that this little our repentance is a fruit of big are repentance and what I mean is it ongoing repentance is the evidence that you have genuinely been saved and so your people who call themselves Christians and continue on and habitual sin and are not broken and repentant have revealed that they're likely not saved and and I'm not talking about an apology we got to look at the difference between it's a lot of people apologize for the person I'm talking about repentance many people are apologizing for their sin because soon as painful it hurts people it actually hurt them and and it hurts it hurts other people
it's a people apologize for their scent they hate the way it makes them feel after they've send and I hate the way it makes other people but in reality an apology by person is different than repentance repentance me a turning away from the sin and turning toward Christ people that are apologetic over there soon and not repented of their sin do they continue to walk in this bitch will send it may be addicted to pornography for for a good example these people aren't repented their apologetic they hate the way that the poor makes them feel after they're done looking at porn they hate the way that makes their spouse feel when they get caught they they hate the guilt and the shame that comes with it and they might apologize for looking at it but in reality they love porn and they keep coming back to it and if they didn't love poem they wouldn't keep coming back to but they do which implies that they have not actually repented in a big are sent or a little
carsense in this is the difference between apology and repentance and so these people are revealing that they are also likely not born-again Believers to a 6-person exhibits genuine repentance in an ongoing manner they they turn away from their sin and toward Christ for forgiveness as the Holy Spirit convicts them of their sin and this is exactly true of my life when I do something stupid or say something stupid or think of something stupid or whatever it might be the holy spirit is a gift of God that comes in and brings conviction in my heart and teach me the difference between right and wrong and I will usually in the moment bring myself to repentance right there but Austin I actually get myself. Of time to even exercise repentance not keeping a long list
other things that I have failed at the great Puritan writer
the Thomas Brooks once said though true repentance is Never Too Late yet late repentance is seldom true this means that saved people repent of their sins quickly and often because they are immediately aware by way of the holy spirit that they just hurt the Savior that they love Jesus says if you love me you'll keep my Commandments love is the evidence obedience and love are the evidence of the relationship between a Believer his Lord so basically our identity is not as a sinner but as a saint who sends so you're no longer a sinner
you're safe here since and you know just a contrast to what a sinner is versus the saint everything an unsaved person does is sinful everything because it's not done in faith and we know that because Romans 14:23 says for whatever is not from faith is sin
even serving the poor as an unbeliever is sinful because you're serving and self-righteousness and this is where we get the verse in Isaiah 64:6 that says all of our righteous acts are like filthy rags
even a righteous stuff isn't good enough outside of Christ
because for the unbeliever sent as a condition it's not an act right we are born into sin we are slaves to send we are born as Sons and Daughters of Adam and we are slaves to sin you can read Romans 3 if you want to learn more about that but for those who are born again they are Sons and Daughters of Jesus and were slaves to Christ who has redeemed Us in part
and we still happened to sit you know what I think it's collations five talks about the war that's happening between the spirit and the Flash their contrary to one another is what it talked about Thomas Watson once said while since Still Remains in the born-again Christian sin does not rain in the born-again Christian but still question remains does the bible actually call us to repent as Christians let's look at 1st John 1 8 through 10 it says if we say that we have no sin we deceive ourselves this is a letter written to Christians by the way so just you don't remember that contacts here he's saying hey guys if we say we have no sin including John we deceive ourselves and the truth that is Jesus right on the way the truth and the life is not in US
first 9 if we confess our sins he Christ is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness
if we say we have not send we make him a liar and his word is not in us all right so we can't argue that we have no sin as Christians we do but we have an advocate with the father Lord Jesus Christ and out of our relationship with our savior like a relationship with her spouse when we write to notify my marriage when I send it to my wife but repentance is required to restore the pier status of that relationship
and that's what this is really about
so yes Christians are called to repent or called to confess our sins to one another and pray for one another we may be saved or called it to bring our sins before the Lord and if the Holy Spirit convicting you upset in
take a moment to repent of it before the Lord in this should be something that's heartbreaking but the lasting joy that comes from being Clean and Clear With God is worth it right this is this is not an act to be driven by legalism this is an act to be driven by love cake you're doing this out of relationship with Christ not because you have to to keep yourself super saved. We're talking about he is faithful to forgive you because he loves you and he will not forsake you but you want to be in right relationship with him
so this is the heart of what I want you guys to walk away with today hopefully you are already practicing repentance will we do at church actually before we do communion YouTube comedian talks about enough for cookies 11:10 in an unfair manner having divisions you know between people or if she's assumed that you had a repetitive I would say these are things that we should be doing before we take communion so that we don't drink condemnation to ourselves as what it says is a complex theological issue but just go along with me for a second is that what we do is we sit before the Lord is a church a little house church and we will have a minute or two of Silence facilitated by whatever gentleman is leading communion at the time of opportunity of repentance of opportunity before the Lord and it's actually one of my favorite parts of church because we just it's a moment you got all my goodness I get to look back across my week and I can
Florida that stupid thing I did this week I forgive me Father
you know my heart no that's not my intention Lord I I should not have done that but I will not do that again or I'm sorry I'm broken over these things I can't believe that I did this thing the grace of God is so great in my life and even still I'm still sitting father forgive me Lord help me encourage me. This is a great time we need to have those moments on a regular basis examine ourselves not because it keeps the super say but because it keeps our relationship here and it's the evidence of somebody who is saved
let's pray father we thank you for your word Lord that it's so deep and so complex it's a notion that we will never reach the bottom there's so much great wisdom and shrews Lord that is all for our benefit father we do not have all of this content to overwhelm his father but all this content that would make us it's for our benefit father we are the beneficiaries of your word and we thank you for that Lord that you've not left us guessing or that you've given us these great things have father I pray that anybody that's listening right now Lord if they have heavy things on their heart since they've committed against you things that are in the dark father that they would drag those things out in Repentance insincere Brokenness to have done something so wicked to spit in the face of their savior father
Lord that you would just bring those things to light Lord that you would purify the relationship with your Saints if it would be fruitfulness enjoy and not shame and condemnation father but the sorrow would be removed and replaced with this pure relationship with you I pray that in your son Jesus's name amen
